Are you planning to visit Leoben for a research stay?

Montanuniversitaet Leoben is a member of the EURAXESS network. EURAXESS is a platform that provides extensive information about mobility matters, allows universities and individual people to connect and find projects and funding possibilities. It offers an opportunity for researchers, entrepreneurs, universities and businesses to connect and interact with each other.

At our university, many guest researchers work in different departments, chairs and institutes within the framework of joint research projects or as part of their doctoral studies. It should be noted that guest researchers are not employed at the Technical University of Leoben. They are therefore not entitled to a salary or any other kind of financial compensation. They can be supported by external funding.

MIRO - Welcome Center registers guest researchers at the university and is also your point of contact for questions regarding entry, accommodation, insurance etc.

IMPORTANT: Registration as a guest researcher provides accident and liability insurance cover for the activities carried out at MUL during the stay.

Process
  • Contact the department or institute at MUL which you want to visit and discuss with a suitable supervisor the possibilities for your guest research stay
  • Your supervisor must inform the MIRO-Welcome Center about your research stay
  • The Welcome Center contacts the guest researcher and coordinates all the necessary steps for registration
  • Guest researchers will be registered at the university's HR department with the status "Guest Researcher" and will receive a personnel number (p-number). This will give you access to the university intranet “MUonline”
  • Guest PhD students or Master level students who pursue research at MUL are registered as incoming guest students through the Study Support Center. They receive a student matriculation number
  • Please read the information provided by the Welcome Center on how to prepare for your stay (see checklists etc)
  • Visit the MIRO-Welcome Center after your arrival in Leoben to conclude the registration process

Persons from third countries, i.e. non-EU/EEA citizens, require an appropriate Austrian residence permit or a visa for their study or research stay in Austria.

Third-country nationals require a valid visa/residence permit to take up employment in Austria, even if they are allowed to enter Austria without a visa.

Research is generally an activity subject to a visa requirement.

EU/EEA citizens and Swiss citizens do not require a visa to enter Austria; they only need a valid travel document (passport, identity card). If you are planning a stay of more than 3 months, you require a registration certificate for EU/EEA citizens. This must be applied for at the District Authority of Leoben within 4 months.
